US National Races

This section contains all known races held in the United States except World Championship rounds of 12 Hours of Sebring and professional events that were part of USAC Road Racing Championship and later USRRC and Can-Am. The first race included here is Watkins Glen Grand Prix in 1948. Later in 1951 the SCCA National Championship was formed. It is not known which races were part of this championship and which not (any help with that is very appreciated as well as any help with missing results). Those that are believed to be SCCA Nationals are listed first with round number less than 100. Other races that weren't counted to SCCA National Championship or it is not known are listed behind SCCA Nationals starting with round number from 101 and above. These rounds number should be more considered as an auxiliary sort number rather then real round number.

SCCA did organise not only National events but also large number of Regional and Divisional events. Some of those races can be also found in this section but because of their large number and usually low importance only few of them are known and listed here. During the first three seasons of SCCA National Championship only one overall champion was declared according to larger number of points accumulated in all classes during the year. That was changed in 1954 when each class had its own champion. Cars were divided into Modified and Production sports car categories. Both modified and production cars were further divided into many classes according to engine capacities. Thus SCCA recognized champions in AP, BP, ... and HP classes for production cars and CM, DM, EM, ... HM champions among modified cars drivers. Later SCCA dropped capacity as a base for placing production cars into classes but rather made a list of available sports cars in each class according to their performance.

SCCA National Championship continued in this form until 1965 when a new system was adopted. There were no more only about 10 national events per year as before but rather each region had its own SCCA National Championship. That produced extremely large number of National Champions. Also number of races increased several times but their importance fell down very dramatically and races had merely a club level statut. At the end of 1965 an American Road Race of Champions was held. It invited best drivers of each region from all classes. This race was first time held in 1964 but had no championship status. For 1966 season National Championships in each region were dropped and only Race of Champions that invited best drivers of Regional Championships decided National Champions in each class. The American Road Race of Champions became soon known as SCCA Run-Offs. This system is more or less used until present days. To maintain results of all those club races until present days would be nearly impossible and would hardly exceed boundaries of other people's interest than those who really participate in them, so they are not included here. .
